The airline was founded in 1967 as Air Southwest and it was originally determined to serve only three cities in Texas. At present, it is the largest US-based low-cost airline. Its headquarters are in Dallas, Texas. Southwest Airlines operates both short-haul and long-haul flights and its main base is located in Las Vegas at McCarran International Airport.

The airline has its own frequent flyer program named Rapid Rewards. Checked baggage allowance is included in the ticket price whereas onboard refreshments are sold separately. The airline offers online check-in on its website.

Its fleet consisted of 565 aircraft in 2011.
